Committee agrees: HOAs need reining in, according the The Denver Daily News, a legislative committee agreed yesterday that homeowners associations need to be reined in, but the lawmakers did not goes far as to OK a plan to create a state ombudsman’s office for homeowners until revisions are made to the proposal.  The panel heard from homeowners complaining about overreaching associations in what one witness called the “wild, wild, west of HOA land."  Division of Real Estate chief Erin Toll said "There needs to be clear standards of conduct about what HOAs can and can't do along with clear sanctions if they don't follow those standards of conduct."

Similar legislation is being put forward in Florida I think.  HOAs * especially those that are self-managed * get out of control very quickly and can cause irreparable harm to the property and owners' units value
